The aim of EstProc was to deliver research on
hydrodynamic and sediment processes in estuaries and the interactions
between biology and sediments. This fundamental new research has
informed the further development of the management tools for estuary
morphology, water quality and ecology assessed in Phases 1 and 2
of the Estuaries Research Programme.
The main objectives of EstProc were:
- Improved understanding of Hydrodynamic Processes in estuaries
(Task 1)
- Undertaking investigation into Sedimentary Processes in estuaries
(Task 2)
- Investigating interactions between Biological and Sedimentary
Processes in estuaries (Task 3)
Research on specific scientific objectives within
each Task and the linkages between tasks addressed the Terms of
Reference developed within the joint Defra/Environment Agency Theme
of R&D in Fluvial, Estuarine and Coastal Processes. The research
has provided underpinning knowledge for other projects let within
this Theme and others let under the Themes of Broad Scale Modelling
and Risk Evaluation and Understanding of Uncertainty.
EstProc was completed at the end of November
2004. An Open Science Meeting on the 13th of October
2004 was held at the Geological Society in London to give everyone
the opportunity to hear and comment on the findings of this 3-year
programme of research. For further information on that event, click
